MABON'S DAY.
REST differs from laziness. The only trueheir of rest is labour. The creation is but the great battle-field of Life's contest. "The fittest survive" is the motto of being. Although in the midst of the great struggle of life, we find after all that labour is but a storm—clad tide swelling with a mighty rush towards the beautiful haven of rest. Labour is Life on the march to rest, which when reached is but a boundless fountain of revival and new life. The daisy stares the scorching sun through the day, but forgets the world, and enfolds itself in a dream of heaven under the rest of night. And everywhere, we find that rest is the beauty of labour, as meditation is the cream of study, which is but the "dreaming awake" of labour in the shady repose of Rest. And as mental labour requires rest so does physical. We mean rest as it is implied in the contrast between. meditation and sleep. And Mabon's Day is the colliers rest; though since established it has made an expanding growth in many directions, carrying with it its privileges to other classes of men. We are very sorry though to admit that often it is not used to the best advantage. But after all it opens the door before the heroes of the death—haunted paths underground to the life—giving grandeur of thought. We are glad to see so many Eisteddfodau, &c., held on this day, which derive the highest benefit from it. It was established to keep down the crushing supply of coal. It is therefore a reviving power and throws throbbing life to the welfare of mankind.
