ORIAU TYWYLL.

Er fod y Diwygiad Protestanaidd wedi cael ei ddwyn oddi-amgylch yn y deyrnas hon yn nyddiau Harri VIII., cyfnod tywyll du oedd blynyddoedd ei deyrnasiad ef a'i dri phlentyn—Edward, Mari, ac Elizabeth.

Nid yn erbyn Pabyddiaeth ond yn erbyn y Babaeth y gwrthdystiodd Harri VIII. Yr oedd y grefydd a sefydlwyd gan fab y Cymro a enillodd goron Lloegr ar Faes Bosworth, mor Babyddol yn ei hanfod pan fu efe farw, ag ydoedd pan roddodd y Pab iddo'r teitl o Amddiffynydd y Ffydd—teitl camarweiniol sydd wedi ymddangos ar arian bathol y teyrn o ddyddiau Harri hyd ein dyddiau ni. Y cwbl a wnaeth y Diwygiad Protestanaidd Swyddogol yn nyddiau Harri a'i ferched, oedd trosglwyddo awdurdod y Pab i'r teyrn. Yr oedd Harri yn gymaint o Bab wedi sefydlu'r Diwygiad ag a fu Paul III. erioed cyn hynny—ac yr oedd Elizabeth yn fwy o Bab na'r un o'r ddau. Cafodd Harri gan ei Senedd i'w gydnabod ef yn Ben yr Eglwys;^[1]

↑ "Although the King's Majestic rightly and rightfully is and ought to be Supreame Head of the Church of England Convocationibus and so is recognised by the Clergy of this Realme in their Convocations yet neverthelesse for coroboration and confirmation thereof &c. —Be it enacted by the authority of this present Parliament that the King our Sovereign Lord his heirs and successors Kings of this Realme shall be taken accepted and reputed the only Supreame Head on Earth of the Church of England called Anglicana Ecclesia and shall enjoy annexed and united to the Imperial Crown of this Realme, as well the title and stile thereof as all honour, pre-eminency, dignities jurisdictions priviledges authorities immunities profits and commodities to the said dignity or Supreame Head of the Church belonging and appertaining. And that our Sovereign Lord the King his heirs and successors Kings of this Realme shall have full power and authority from time to time to visit, represse, redresse, reform, order, correct, restraine, and amend all such errors, heresies, abuses, offences, contempts and enormities whatsoever they be, which by any manner of spiritual authority or jurisdiction ought or may lawfully be reformed, repressed, redressed, corrected, restrained, or amended &c. any usage custome forraine Law to the contrary notwithstanding."—(26 Henry VIII. cap. i.)
