Disgrifiad

English: Cherubs, drawn by José Antolínez, private collection. Sold at auction at Sotheby's on July 8, 2021.
  • Black chalk on buff paper
  • Dimensions: 223 x 288 mm

Provenance: Sale, London, Sotheby's, 30 November 1927, lot 49 (to Meatyard); Paul Oppé (1878-1957) purchased from Meatyard (20s), his posthumous sale, London, Christie's, Master Drawings from the Oppé Collection, 6 December 2006, lot 39 (as Venetian(?) School, early 18th Century) Collection of Carlos Alberto Cruz (Apelles Collection). Sold at auction at Sotheby's on July 8, 2021.

The attribution to Antolínez was first proposed by Dr. Zahira Véliz, former curator of the Apelles Collection, who rightly stressed the great stylistic similarities with the artist's painted work. These foreshortened putti, with very close peculiarities in the rendering of the anatomy to their painted counterpart, can be seen surrounding the numerous Immaculate Conceptions, executed by the artist in the second half of the seventeenth Century.
