THOMAS PAYNE,
Born January 16, 1797, Died April, 1854,
The only son of Thomas Payne, once of Furness Compton, andof Eliza (Healch), his wife.

At sixteen he was Ensign in the Carnarvonshire Militia, under
Colonel T. Asheton Smith, whence he volunteered for service
in the Peninsula. He was present at Salamanca, Vittoria,
The passage of the Biddoossoa (when he had two horses killed
under him), and at St. Jean De Livez. In this parish he lived
many years as a Surveyor, Civil Engineer, and Land Agent.
The Torrent Walks were designed by him, &c., &c.
