ON THE ESCAPE OF CAPTAIN FOULKES,

In the great storm of September 10th, 1741, when, driven by a hard gale from Elianus Point to the
North of Ireland, his sails and rigging were swept overboard.

QUID crepat? Haud intra ripas se continet æquor!
Numquid dejectum tecta feruntur aqua?
Væ misero nautæ pelago qui credere vitam
Sustinet, insanis jam periturus aquis.
Qualiter heu qualis fremitu furit Eurus in undas!
Qualiter oppositam verberat unda ratem!
Vertice jam coelum tangit, jam fertur in Orcum;
Spreta sibi quondam littora nauta cupit.
Iratum numen pelagi prece vexat inani;
Littus ut attingat millia vota vovet.
Stulte, nimis sero moriundus pectora plangis;
Sero nimis, periens æquore, littus amas.
Si semel attinges littus ne rursus ad æquor,
Vela daturus, eas; ne patiaris idem.
Kyboei templum petito cum vestibus udis,
Quas suspende, memor quanta pericla fugis.
