CHAPTER XI.

Llew Llwyfo's Letters.

MUCH as he wished to spend the winter with his friend Meredith Davies at St. Louis, he decided to return home to his family at Rosendale; for, on the 6th of November, he wrote his sister from Bangor, Wis., that he expected to reach Rosendale at a certain date, requesting someone to meet him there. So Risiart Ddu o Wynedd went home—home to die!

But before mentioning his last illness, some remarks of his old friend, Llew Llwyfo, which appeared in the "Herald Cymraeg," come in very appropriate here. It seems that Llew went on a concert tour through the Welsh settlements of Minnesota the winter after Risiart Ddu's death, when his memory was fresh in the minds of the people, among whom his gentlemanly demeanor and Christian conduct had made so many friends. We quote from Llew's articles:—

"In the spring of 1868 Risiart Ddu went to Minnesota, hoping that the clear air and dry climate of that State would benefit his health. He remained there and in Wis. until the fall of 1869, when he re- turned to his home and relatives at Rosendale. Minnesota helped him. I heard his friends say that he loved that State; and when I went there last winter I found that all the Welsh loved the name of Risiart Ddu o Wynedd.
