Cymer y plwyf ei enw oddiwrth Derfel Gadarn, rhyfelwr cadarn yn y chweched canrif. Yr oedd yn fab i Hywel ap Emyr Llydaw, ac yn un o abadau mynachlog fawr Ynys Enlli. Daeth ei enw yn hysbys, a'i ddewrder yn glodforus, mewn canlyniad i'r rhan a gymerodd yn mrwydr Camlan. Ond gadawodd waewffon rhyfel, a chymerodd yn ei lle y ffon fugeiliol, gan gysegru ei oes i wasanaethu crefydd. Fel hyn enillodd ei ffordd i blith y seintiau Cymreig, a gosodwyd i fyny yn Eglwys Llandderfel ddelw o hono yn gerfiedig mewn coed. Cyrchai pererinion o bob cwr i dalu gwarogaeth i'r ddelw hon, a hyny gyda chymaint o defosiwn ag a hynodent ddilynwyr Mahomet ar eu ffordd i Mecca. Credai llawer o honynt fod gan y sant allu i waredu ei edmygwyr o boenau colledigaeth. Dywedir fod cynifer a phum' cant wedi dyfod o wahanol barthau ar y 5ed o Ebrill, 1537, sef dydd Gwylmabsant y lle, i "ymostwng i'r ddelw." Dichon mai nid annyddorol fydd dyfynu yma lythyr a anfonwyd gan Ellis Price, y dirprwywr i'r perwyl yn Esgobaeth Llanelwy, at Syr Thomas Cromwell, y Ficar cyffredinol, yn hysbysu am fodolaeth yr eilun hwn, ac yn gofyn ei ewyllys yn ei gylch:—
"Right honorable, and my syngular good lorde and mayster, all circumstanncys and thankes sett aside pleasithe yt yowre good lordshipe to be aduisid that where I was constitute and made by yowre honorable desire and commaundmente comissiarie generall of the dyosese of Saynte Asaph, I haue done my diligens and dutie for the expulsinge and takynge awaye of certen abusions supersticions and ipocryses usid withyn the saide dyosese of Saynte Asaph accordynge to the kynges honorable rules and injunctions therein made, that notwithstandinge, there ys an image of Darvell Gadarn withyn the saide diosese in whom the people have so greate confidence hope and trust that they come dayly a pilgramage unto hym some with kyne, other withe oxen or horsis, and the reste withe money in so much that there was fyve or syxe hundrethe pillgrames to a mans estimacon that offered to the saide image the fifte date of this presente monethe of Apll; the innocente people hathe ben sore aluryd and entisid to worshipe the saide image in so muche that there is a comyn saynge as yet amongist them that who so ever will offer auie thinge to the saide image of Darvell Gadarn, he hathe power to fatche hym or them that so offers once oute of hell when they be dampned. Therefore for the reformacon and amendmente of the premisis I wolde gladlie knowe by this berer youre honorable
